Emilio Moran, Ph.D., Principal Investigator
Dr. Moran is a John A. Hannah Distinguished Professor associated with the Center for Global Change and Earth Observations, the Center for System Integration and Sustainability, and the Department of Geography, Environment and Spatial Sciences at Michigan State University.
Before joining MSU in January 2013, Moran served as Distinguished Professor and the James H. Rudy Professor of Anthropology at Indiana University. Dr. Moran is the author of eleven books, sixteen edited volumes and more than 200 journal articles and book chapters. His research has been supported by NSF, NIH, NOAA and NASA for the past three decades. His three latest books, Environmental Social Science (Wiley/Blackwell 2010), People and Nature, second edition (Blackwell 2017) and Human Adaptability, 3rd edition (Westview 2007) address broad issues of human interaction with the environment.
Moran is also a Fellow of the Linnean Society of London, a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2010. He was appointed to a six-year term to the National Science Board in 2016. In this role he provides advice to the National Science Foundation, and the nation, on major decisions in science and technology.
