We utilized secondary data to locate off-grid communities in the Brazilian Amazon. We found a concentration of energy-deficient populations in the Tapajós-Arapiuns Extractive reserve, in Santarém, Pará. This area is in relative proximity to the major city of Santarém, where we have the University of Western Pará (Ufopa) to partner with and local capacity for building the in-stream turbines. These elements made this an excellent location to test our Convergence Framework by ensuring that the technology will have locally trained people to guarantee the sustainability of the energy solution proposed in our project.
